How to save your laptop’s battery for a longer time?
At the heart of the laptop experience is the ability to take your machine with you almost
anywhere you go; an AC outlet isn’t necessary - at least for as long as the battery still has a
charge. Modern laptop batteries represent an incredible improvement in performance in the
past decade. Today you can reasonably expect a lightweight battery about the size of a television
remote control to power a laptop for three to seven hours, even as newer and more power-
hungry components like high-speed processors, color LCDs, and DVD players and recorders
arrive.
The state of the art in batteries today is based on lithium ion (LiOn) technology. In addition to
being able to hold a large charge in a small, relatively lightweight package, LiOn batteries are
also relatively immune from the “memory effect” problem that afflicts other designs, including
nickel cadmium (NiCad) devices. Memory effect is a phenomenon that steadily reduces the
battery’s capacity if it’s recharged without being completely discharged of its energy. Be sure
to consult your laptop’s instruction manual for specific advice on how to get the most life from
the battery.
