How to Free a Bit of Clogged RAM

How to Free a Bit of Clogged RAM(2)

Tips
1.Check the Task Manager for crashed programs which haven't properly closed, as they sometimes leave a process open without you knowing.

2.When disabling and re-enabling explorer.exe be careful as sometimes when running applications which display a button in the time/date area they will disappear (For example, AIM or MSN.) If this is the case, your best bet is to disable the process and restart it.

3.If this doesn't work and your computer continues to lag, try a reboot, if the problem persists your CPU may be overheating or your RAM may be dying. Check the system temperature by accessing the BIOS menu.

4.The reason this works is that killing explorer.exe frees all memory used by it. When the process is restarted, it would then be free of memory leaks and similar memory bloat.

Warnings
Sometimes slow performance is caused by dust in the computer itself, so buy a can of compressed air and spray the dust out.

Things You'll Need
1.Windows XP
2.Basic understanding of computers

How to Free a Bit of Clogged RAM

How to Free a Bit of Clogged RAM(1)

This general how-to will teach you how to free a bit of clogged RAM quite fast. Often after running several large applications, the computer tends to run a bit slower and lags quite a bit. This is a simple way to solve this problem some of the time.

This how-to is written on Windows XP, so on older versions you may have to adapt until I can test it out myself on an older operating system.

Steps
1.Hit CTRL, ALT and DEL to access task manager.

2.Upon accessing task manager, go to processes and click on the button that says CPU.

3.Compare and contrast the memory usage of a program with its CPU usage.

4.Look for explorer.exe and hit 'End Process.' If done correctly, your task bar will disappear, but Don't Panic!

5.Click on the 'Applications' tab, and then click the 'New Task...' button.

A small dialogue box will appear, with a few buttons and a text bar.

6.In the text bar, type in explorer.exe, then hit 'OK.'

7.You're done, and your computer may run a bit smoother.

Save Power on a Laptop

How to Save Power on a Laptop(2)

6.Unplug any USB devices you are not using (iPods, Flash Drives, External USB mice, etc.). Many of these devices draw power from your USB port, up to 500 mA (about a half an Amp) and 5 volts. It adds up quickly depending on how many you have plugged in.

7.When you are not going to use your laptop for a short time, put it into standby or sleep mode. This will only leave dire essential components in the computer running such as the memory. And allow you to resume working on your computer quickly.

8.When you are not going to be using your laptop for a even longer time, put it into hibernate(Shift+Standby Button) mode. It will have the same effect as turning the computer off, but it will allow you to go back to working on your laptop just like in standby and uses little to no power from the battery.

Tips
1.You can always buy extra batteries for your computer!
2.The best way, though not effective for travel, is to use your power cord.

Save Power on a Laptop

How to Save Power on a Laptop (1)

So you want to save some juice on your laptop... find out how!

Steps
1.Be sure to make the brightness of your computer to the lowest setting that is comfortable. To do this, look for a purple "fn" button on the keyboard(usually next to the left ctrl key, sometimes the key has blue lettering instead of purple). After you've found the "fn" button, quickly search for another key with a purple or blue sun with an up or down arrow(usually on the arrow keys or on one of the F1-F12 keys). Now while holding "fn" press the button with the purple/blue sun and a down arrow.

2.Turn off all background programs that are not needed because they take up processor space which will use more battery.

3.Check that bluetooth and/or wireless adapter is off (if it's built in).

4.Be sure to eject any discs out of your CD or DVD drive if you do not need them. The disc will still be spinning inside and consumes a ton of energy.

5.If you are running very low on power, or are watching a DVD, your laptop may have a way to turn off the LED lights (Power light, hard drive activity light, etc.). Check your owners manual to see how.

Work on a Computer Safely

How to Work on a Computer Safely(3)

Steps

7.Install (or have somebody else install) an anti-virus and an anti-spyware software. It is best to check what files are infected before lettings the virus scanner delete the file. If it had infected a system file it will most likely end with your computer never starting again. You will want to try to disinfect the file possibly with multiple programs. If you have a virus or spy ware do not let it sit in the quarantine. Address the problem immediately before further problems arise.

8.When it comes to dealing with computers, the only time anything is private is off line. While you are online privacy is virtually non-existent. Never put any private information on the internet or while you are doing online banking make sure your connection is encrypted or you are using an anonymous IP.

9.Never share financial information over the internet. Always use some sort of privacy program like encryption or anonymous IP when dealing with banking or anything that requires a credit card number.
10Avoid having chemicals that cause metal to rust quickly or dissolve plastics anywhere near your computer.

Work on a Computer Safely

How to Work on a Computer Safely(2)

Steps

4.Always make sure the electricity is off before touching any hardware. Some general tips while dealing with hardware are:
When handling hardware, be careful to keep your fingers on the sides of the board or on some sort of plastic or metal covering on something like a GPU to avoid getting oil from your fingers onto the delicate electrical circuits imprinted on the board.
Always be gentle with the hardware. If something won't go in, check to see if it is the right slot for that part. If something wont come out investigate around the piece of hardware and check for any types of clips or fasteners. Do not yank a piece of hardware out of the computer.
Never put hardware anywhere near food's or drinks because they can severely damage the hardware.

5.Make sure to discharge your body of any static charge that might be built up on you. After you open up your computer it is best to ground the case of the machine. If you don't have anything to do this with you can always just touch something metal before touching the computer to discharge any static charge you have on you. And avoid wool clothing because it can build very large static charges.

6.Never have liquids or solids near a computer you are working on. Either of these two things when introduced onto hardware of a computer will create damage. It is also smart not to get these anywhere near your mouse or keyboard because nobody likes a greasy mouse and keyboard or finding crumbs stuck under your mouse and in the keyboard.

Work on a Computer Safely

How to Work on a Computer Safely(1)

Computer usage is increasing all over the world. However, using computers can be dangerous. Also wrong behavior when using the computer might cause damage to the computer. This article will tell you how to safely work on your computer when dealing with electricity, common sense, hardware/software, static charge, liquids and solids, viruses, privacy, security, harmful chemicals, etc.

Steps
1.Never touch any of the circuit boards inside the computer while it is turned on. You will risk electrical shock and possibly ruining your computer. Before working on a computer, always turn the power supply unit's (PSU) power switch off and unplug the power cable. Before touching anything in the computer, it is smart to connect a grounding cable or anything that removes static electricity to avoid frying components.

2.Use your common sense. When you are working on your computer while it is running, never move, slide, bump or pick up the computer or you will risk ruining the hard disks and possibly creating other problems. Also, always make sure the computer is turned off before opening it up if you need to. Other things that almost everyone knows such as not to handle drinks or food around your computer while you are opening it up or you may risk getting food lodged inside moving parts or spilling drinks on delicate electronics.

3.Make sure you know what you are doing while dealing with the software of your computer.
Fully understand what needs to be done before playing with the settings in any of your malfunctioning programs.
It is best to look up your problem in some sort of a search engine because most likely someone else has already had this problems and solved it.
If you can not find your problem or a fix to it, you may try changing settings and properties to see if that will solve the problem. Make sure you save and memorize the changes you make so as to be able to reverse them in case you needed to.
If nothing else works you may want to re-install the software.

How to Clean a CD Player

How to Clean a CD Player(2)

Tips
Make sure the cotton swab is tightly twisted. There must not be cotton strings left on the lens.
If your player still doesn't work, take it to a repair shop. Don't tamper with the electrical system.
Warnings
Never put your hands in something that's plugged in the power socket! Even skilled technicians don't if they can avoid it!

Things You'll Need
Phillips head screwdriver
95% ethanol (isopropyl alcohol will also work - both may be found in pharmacies)
WD-40 or similar thin spray-grease
Cotton swabs (Q-Tips)

How to Clean a CD Player

How to Clean a CD Player(2)

Steps

1.Make sure there is no CD in the player. Open the tray and disconnect the power cable without switching it off from the power button - this will leave the tray open, allowing you access to the optics.

2.Unscrew and remove the top cover. Turn the cover upside down and place the screws inside it to prevent losing them.

3.Spray some WD40 on a Q-Tip (cotton swab) and grease the rails that the laser slides on. To move the laser and grease the part of the rails under it, turn the biggest of the plastic cogwheels - make sure you don't use excessive force when doing this.

4.Take another cotton swab and dip it in the ethanol.

5.Squeeze it between your fingers to remove excess ethanol. The cotton must be damp, but not dripping.

6.Clean the lens of the laser by wiping with the cotton swab.

7.Wait a few minutes until the lens dries.

8.Put the cover back on, and fasten the screws, making sure to avoid over tightening them (this could crack the plastic case)

9.Turn on the player without putting a disc in it. If your player is a mini-system, switch it

to CD mode. You will hear a sliding sound, which is the laser returning to its proper position.

10.Put in a CD and enjoy!

2.In Linux, be sure to mount the file system as read-only before attempting. NTFS file systems can only be opened by default in read-only mode, without additional packages.

Things You'll Need
1.Laptop Hard Drive Adaptor Kit 2.5 TO 3.5 inch IDE HDD

OR A 2.5" USB 2.0 or Firewire drive enclosure.

2.A few small screwdrivers

3.A compatible PC with an available power and IDE connection.

1.You can find the adaptor kits on eBay by searching the terms in quotes in step 1. They cost less than $10 with shipping.

2.Fry's Electronics also sells a Drive to USB adaptor set, which connects USB to IDE (2.5, 3.5, 5.25)/SATA COOLMAX 2.5"/3.5"5.25" IDE/SATA TO USB2.0 CONVERTER - CD-350-COMBO at Frys.com it has been very helpful for me as a computer repair person, not to mention that I've loaned it out to co-workers until they finally bought one of their own.

3.You may also put the laptop drive with adaptor kit into an external drive enclosure if you have one.

4.You may need to adjust the primary/slave jumper settings on the hard disks (both laptop and PC). When attaching either in a USB enclosure or to a converter be sure to set the hard drive as a Master. Having it set to Cable Select or Slave will often times not work or not work properly.

5.When you are finished, the laptop drive can be secured in the PC case and left as a secondary disk on the PC, if you don't need it for anything else.

How to Recover Data from the Hard Drive of a Dead Laptop

How to Recover Data from the Hard Drive of a Dead Laptop(1)

This guide will tell you how to recover data from a dead laptop, as long as the laptop was running some version of windows or Linux on an x86 platform, and died of something other than hard drive failure.

Steps

Method 1
1.Purchase a "Laptop Hard Drive Adaptor Kit" to allow you to plug your laptop hard drive into a standard PC (2.5 TO 3.5 inch IDE HDD).

2.Find a functioning standard PC that can read the file system that was on the laptop. One would need Windows 2k/XP or a Linux distribution to read an NTFS/FAT file system, whereas only a Linux distribution can read the EXT3 file system.

3.Open up the case and add the laptop drive with adaptor kit as a secondary HDD. Be sure that you have set this drive to either Cable Select, or Slave, depending on the configuration of the system, and the available IDE ports.

4.Copy the data you need from the laptop drive to the main drive of the PC, or consider using removable storage for small files.

Method 2
1.Purchase or cannibalize a 2.5" USB 2.0 or Firewire drive enclosure.

2.Find a functioning standard PC with an open USB port (or firewire port, as applicable) that can read the file system that was on the laptop. One would need Windows 2k/XP or a Linux distribution to read an NTFS/FAT file system, whereas only a Linux distribution can read the EXT3 file system.

3.Plug it in, wait for the tones (and/or mount it if that is necessary in this system)

4.Copy the data you need from the laptop drive to the main drive of the PC, or consider using removable storage for small files.

How to Clean Battery Corrosion and Build Up

How to Clean Battery Corrosion and Build Up(4)

Things You'll Need
1.For mild corrosion:
A small amount of vinegar (white is cheap)
An applicator (You don't need anything fancy. A lint-free cloth will work fine if the terminals are easy to get to. A Q-tip works nicely for ones that are more deep-set.)

Fine sandpaper and/or baking soda (for more extreme cases)

2.For build up:
Diluted water
Rubber gloves
Lint-free cloth(s)
Baking soda

How to Clean Battery Corrosion and Build Up

How to Clean Battery Corrosion and Build Up(3)

Tips
While it may seem like a bright idea to use a base like baking soda to remove the acid (build up), acid-base reactions are exothermic and can generate significant amounts of heat. These are mild acids and bases, but it's still best to play it safe.

Warnings

1.Battery acid is caustic! Any powdery build-up should be treated as crystallized acid and cleaned with proper hand and eye protection, although gloves and not cleaning too vigorously will get you through in most situations.
If any acid gets into your eyes and mucous membranes (yes, that includes your nose), immediately get the affected body part under the faucet and turn it on to flush away the acid!

2.Using the baking soda will create water and salt. Either of those can cause a short circuit if left in the battery compartment or if it leaks in. Be sure to dry the device thoroughly. Do not immerse it unless you can detach the battery case entirely from the rest of the device. If any of the baking soda/vinegar mixture gets into the device, you're probably best off opening the device and cleaning it off, or taking the device to a professional.

3.As with anything involving monkeying around delicate circuitry with water, acids, and bases, this may cause damage to the device. But with careful cleaning and proper caution, the risk is fairly low.

How to Clean Battery Corrosion and Build Up

How to Clean Battery Corrosion and Build Up(2)

Build Up
1.Gather the required materials.

2.Do not touch the white crusty build-up with your bare skin! That's battery acid which has leaked from the battery and it can burn your skin.
If you do touch it, be sure to rinse your hands off thoroughly with warm soapy water before getting them close to your eyes or any mucous membranes. Let the water run vigorously because the acid will likely become active as it's hydrated. Fast-running water will help rinse it off before it starts to burn you.

3.Try removing the battery case and soaking it in water or a dilute solution of baking soda (best case scenario).

4.Gently scrub the build-up off with a moistened towel while wearing rubber gloves. Remove as much as you can in this manner.

5.Use a dilute solution of baking soda on a towel to remove the rest. You will almost definitely get hissing and fizzing, as well as the creation of salt and water. If the battery casing is not waterproof (it generally isn't), you may want to perform this step over a sink with the battery case facing down so that any generated water or salt will drip out.

6.Swab the inside with a dampened lint-free cloth. Distilled water is better in the long run to prevent build-up, but tap water won't cause significant problems in this situation.

7.Gently dry the terminals with another lint-free cloth. Ensure that everything is dry before putting the batteries in. If necessary, leave the camera sitting out overnight to let any remaining water get out.

How to Clean Battery Corrosion and Build Up

How to Clean Battery Corrosion and Build Up(1)

Ever accidentally left those AA batteries in your digital camera for a month and found that no matter how many times you replace them, the power dies within seconds of turning it on? The problem is simple, battery terminal corrosion, and the solution is just as simple.

Steps
1.Check for the corrosion and follow the corresponding directions.
Mild corrosion: On the traditional shiny terminals, this usually shows up as a dark dull spot.
Build up: In extreme cases, you may see a crusty build-up. If the build-up is significant, the solution is a bit more tricky.

Mild Corrosion
1.Gather the required materials.

2.Lightly soak your applicator in vinegar.

3.Gently swab at the terminal. Don't be alarmed if there's a fizzing reaction. That's perfectly natural.

4.Rub with a bit more vigor if the corrosion doesn't seem to be going away. If that still doesn't remove the corrosion, you can gently rub the area with fine sand-paper to remove the corroded bits before trying the vinegar again.

5.Enjoy the return of life to your batteries. And remember to remove them before putting your camera away next time.

How to Backup a Folder With a Flash Memory Drive

How to Backup a Folder With a Flash Memory Drive(1)

This guide will explain how to use a Flash Memory drive to backup the Shared Documents folder on a computer. (Directions for Windows.)

Steps
1.Insert Flash Memory Drive into the USB port on the front, side or rear of the computer.

2.Double click "My Computer" on the Desktop or go to Start - My Computer.

3.Right Click the Shared Documents folder, select "Send To", and then select "Removable Device".

4.If you receive a prompt to overwrite the files currently on the drive, check to make sure you do not want the old versions of the files. If you do not receive the overwrite prompt, then proceed to step 5.

5.The files will begin to copy over to the Flash Memory drive. This can take a long time, depending upon the amount of data that is being transferred. When it is complete the "File Transfer" window will disappear.

6.In My Computer, Right Click the Removable Device and select Eject. It will then disappear from the screen and you can unplug the Flash Memory Card from the computer.

7.Back up your important photos, scanned papers on these. 2 GB has come down in price.

Tips
Make sure your Flash Drive has enough space to store all the documents you want to backup. 256 MB should be plenty for simple Word or Excel documents.
Warnings
Never remove the flash drive without first hitting "eject" , otherwise you could lose your data and damage your flash drive and computer.
