Etch a Circuit Board

How to Etch a Circuit Board(5)

Warnings

1.The etching solution is very dangerous, so always wear your gloves and goggles, and always work in an open area.

2.The Hydrochloric acid you are using is 12 molar, take care not to spill any on your skin, as it will cause SEVERE chemical burns.

3.Copper dust is toxic so please wear a dust mask.

Etch a Circuit Board

How to Etch a Circuit Board(4)

Tips

1.Remember that the circuit board can take up to twenty minutes to etch without agitation, but as little as seven with agitation

2.Circuit boards are relatively cheap. There is a probability that you will make a mistake, so buy enough to work with and make batches of two or more.

3.Do not look directly over your etching basin, or you will inhale toxic gas.

4.For large, complicated boards or large batches a drill press is more reliable and really speeds up the work.

5.If MultiSim is too expensive, or not available, a good free program is PCBExpress or Eagle CAD's free version.

6.Muriatic acid can usually be acquired at a hardware store or pool store.

Assembly

Hand-held Drill or Drill Press

Soldering iron

Solder

Various drill bits.

1.Before drilling locate all the positions of the through-hole components. Also please note that copper dust is toxic so wear a dust mask.

2.Drill through the board with a bit wide enough to accommodate whatever part must be placed at that location. Remember not to make the hole to wide, or soldering will be very difficult.

3.Place the components on to the circuit board at their designated locations. Gently bend the legs of the component against the underside of the board, to hold the part in place. Make sure parts with polarity are lined up correctly with the corresponding positive and negative. Check and double-check the location of all parts before soldering.

4.Soldering is a skill that requires practice, although it is not inherently difficult. Please see Soldering Electronics for help.

5.Test your circuit board before installing it into its permanent location. Use a multimeter, if possible, to diagnose connection problems. A de-soldering gun can be used to make minor switches and repairs.

How to Etch a Circuit Board(2)

Etching

1.Put on the goggles and gloves. Always remember safety first.

2.Make sure the area is extremely well ventilated before mixing. Some of the chemical produce hazardous fumes.

3.Mix are Hydrochloric acid and Hydrogen peroxide. Mix two parts Hydrogen Peroxide for every one part Hydrochloric Acid. When mixed, they form a substance that is a severe skin irritant, will produce toxic chlorine gas.

4.In a non-metallic basin pour enough of the solution to completely submerge the circuit board.

5.Drop in the circuit board and agitate it for about ten to fifteen minutes. Continue stirring until all copper has dissolved, and the solution has taken on a slight green tinge.

6.For cleanup, make sure you are wearing gloves. Wash the board off in cold water to remove any etching solution. Then use a paper towel or rag to dry it off completely. Set it aside. Assure that there is no solution in the workspace or containers then remove the gloves and goggles.

7.Mix a one to one ratio of acetone and ethanol. Take a paper towel, dip it into the washing solution, and gently rub it over the surface of the board. The permanent marker will begin to come off. Continue washing until all marker is gone and you should see that your circuit is now inscribed in the copper.

How to Etch a Circuit Board(1)

Have you ever wanted to make a circuit board at home? Now you can, for use in all types of homemade electronic components

Steps

Design

1.Have a procedure in mind before attempting the task that is to be accomplished, and a good design is always needed.

2.Draw the circuit schematic on either graph paper or a simulation programs such as MultiSim or Eagle CAD. The schematic should contain a detailed description of all parts, as well as easy to follow connections, keep in mind that a basic form of the schematic will be drawn on the circuit board. For help drawing schematics, please visit: Open Circuit Design
3.If a simulation program is being used, test the circuit thoroughly in the simulated environment. If no simulation program is used, it is necessary to assemble one or more prototypes of the circuit on a breadboard. Breadboards are very easy to use, and allow one to view the results of a circuit in real time without the need for solder or creating permanent etches. For help with breadboards, please visit: Iguana Labs

4.Make sure the circuit functions on the breadboard, or in the simulation software.

Diagnose a Computer Problem

How to Diagnose a Computer Problem(2)

Steps

7.Check RAM and CPU consumption. A common problem is a choppy or sluggish system. If a system is choppy it is good practice to see if a program is consuming more resources than the computer can provide. An easy way to check this is to use the Task Manager, right click on the taskbar select Task Manager, and click the Processes tab. The CPU column contains a number that indicates the percentage of CPU the process is consuming. The Mem Usage column indicates how much memory a process is consuming.

8.Listen to the computer, if the hard drive is scratching or making loud noises, shut off the computer and have a professional diagnose the hard drive. Listen to the CPU fan, this comes on a high speed when the CPU is working hard, and can tell you when the computer is working beyond its capacity.

9.Run a virus and malware scan. Performance problems can be caused by malware on the computer. Running a virus scan can unearth any problems. Use a commonly updated virus scanner (such as Norton Antivirus or Avast! Antivirus) and a commonly updated malware scanner (such as Spybot Search & Destroy).

10.Check for the problem in safe mode. As a last ditch effort, check the problem in safe mode. To enter safe mode, tap F8 repeatedly during POST (this works on most systems). If the problem persists in safe mode, it is a fair bet that the operating system itself is to blame.

Tips

1.If you do not feel comfortable diagnosing or repairing a computer problem, it is best to take the computer to a certified technician and have it repaired for a moderate fee.

2.These procedures will begin to narrow down common problems, but to find a specific problem, tools or specialized techniques may need to be used.

Warnings

Do not attempt to repair problems unless you are sure of what you are doing, what the result will be, as well as any adverse reactions.

Diagnose a Computer Problem

How to Diagnose a Computer Problem(1)

Many people are faced with everyday computer problems that are easy to fix, but are unable to diagnose the actual problem. While there are many problems a computer will be faced with, this article will tell you where to look for common problems.

Steps

1.Check the POST. POST stands for Power On Self Test. This is generally the first or second thing that appears on a computer after turning on the power. This appears before the operating system begins to load. The POST will display any problems found with hardware that makes the computer unable to boot, POST may also display problems with hardware that allow the computer to boot, but not operate at its full capacity during operation.

2.Notice the load time of the OS (operating system). A longer than usual load time may indicate seek errors (or other errors) in the hard drive.

3.Notice any graphics problems once the OS has loaded. Reduced graphics may indicate driver failures or hardware failures with graphic cards.

4.Perform an auditory test. An auditory test is an unorthodox, but still effective way of judging how hard a computer is working. With the computer on and running, play any decent length audio file (usually above 30 secs). If the audio is choppy or slow, it usually means that the processor is working at an elevated level, or there is not enough RAM to run all programs loading. Changing the startup sound is a great way to apply this test.

5.Check any newly installed hardware. Many operating systems, especially Windows, can conflict with new drivers. The driver may be badly written, or it may conflict with another process. Windows will usually notify you about devices that are causing a problem, or have a problem. To check this use the Device Manager, this can be accessed by entering the Control Panel, clicking the System icon, clicking the Hardware tab, and clicking on Device Manager. Use this to check and arrange the properties of hardware.

6.Check any newly installed software. Software may require more resources than the system can provide. Chances are that if a problem begins after software starts, the software is causing it. If the problem appears directly upon startup, it may be caused by software that starts automatically on boot.

Figure out Why a Computer Won't Boot

How to Figure out Why a Computer Won't Boot(3)

Steps

10.There should be a little battery located near the bottom of the motherboard. It is shiny, and could be hidden by some wires. Remember to not touch the motherboard or any other piece of circuitry unless you have to. Locate the battery. It should be in a little holster, with a lever on one end. Pop it out and wait 2 minutes.

11.Put the battery back in, making sure it's on the same side it was when you popped it out. If you don't remember, try putting the shiniest side up. This did not clear any memory on your hard drive, only the CMOS memory, which you don't have to worry about.

12.Put the computer back together and plug it in. If you have any more problems with starting it up, bring it to a computer repair shop. There are so many complicated things that could have gone wrong that it would take hundreds of pages to explain them all to you. But remember, computer repair shops will take advantage of you. They're just like auto mechanics, trying to raise the price out of your own ignorance. Be skeptical and be aware.

Tips

Always make sure you're grounded while working on the inside of a computer.

Warnings

If you're not good with computers, don't take the chance of breaking it by opening it up. Plus, it will void your warranty.

Things You'll Need

1.(If you're venturing inside your computer) A phillips head screwdriver
2.An electrostatic grounding wristband (optional)
3.No frustration. Frustration kills computers.

the article source:http://www.wikihow.com/Figure-out-Why-a-Computer-Won%27t-Boot

Figure out Why a Computer Won't Boot

How to Figure out Why a Computer Won't Boot(2)

Steps

5.Try to start the machine up again. If the computer didn't start up in the first place, check the power switch lead. These little buggers can frequently get unknowingly moved to adjacent pins if you're not careful. If your power switch lead is in the exact right place, check your ATX 12v auxiliary connector. It is a common mistake for people to leave this unplugged.

6.If nothing is working, take the little battery out of the motherboard (should be near the southbridge) and wait 2 minutes for it to fully discharge. Remember, you must have the power cord unplugged to do this. (You should never have cords attached to the back when you're working on a computer.) If you know which jumper on your motherboard is the clear CMOS jumper, you can just move that to the other two pins and wait 5-10 seconds to clear your CMOS. If absolutely nothing works, try taking all of the parts out and putting them back in. This shouldn't be just one by one. Take all of them out, lay them on a table, and put them back in, making sure to connect all necessary wires. Also, make sure you're grounded by simply touching the power supply every 5 minutes or so.

7.If you have a hardware problem and you aren't comfortable working on the inside of computers, take it to a local computer repair shop and describe your problem. The better you describe what's happening on your end, the easier it makes their job on their end, and it'll be cheaper because they won't have to screw around with it as much. If you're a brave soul, and would like to try to fix it yourself, go to the next step.

8.Open up the computer. You should be able to do this by unscrewing the screws on the back. DO NOT unscrew any screws that are near a fan. Only ones on the very outer rim of the back.

9.Do not touch any components of the computer except for the power supply, which you should touch every 5 minutes to keep yourself grounded. This will keep you from frying any of the expensive components in there. One electrostatic shock can bring your system down for good. The power supply is located in the upper left hand corner, and it should have a lot of thick wires coming out of one hole in it.

Figure out Why a Computer Won't Boot

How to Figure out Why a Computer Won't Boot(1)

This article tells you the basics of how to determine if there is faulty hardware in a computer and/or if you have configuration problems.

Steps

1.Turn off your computer. Make sure that all of your wires in the front and back I/O panels are securely plugged in.

2.Turn back on your computer. Observe.

3.If the computer simply does not turn on, or you get stopped at a screen with white writing and a black background, and does not say "Windows" anywhere in it, it is a hardware problem. Shut down your computer again and go to step 4. If you get stopped at a screen that says "windows" anywhere in it, and it asks you to choose an option for booting, read the directions on that page and select the choice based on them.

4.If you are not good with computers, skip to step 7. If you are comfortable with working with the inside of computers, turn it back on and get in the BIOS. From here you should be able to set everything back to normal. If you have overclocked, set your FSB and vCore down to stock levels. If your BIOS has the button, you can press "restore to factory settings" instead of having to go through every menu. This button should be near the back of the bios and is lodged between "exit and save changes" and "exit and discard changes."

Buy and Use an Uninterruptible Power Supply

How to Buy and Use an Uninterruptible Power Supply(3)

Warnings

1.AC powered Devices that are attached to the computer, but not under 'battery' protection need to be plugged into 'surge protected' plugs. A lightning strike or car accident that drops high-tension cables onto your lower voltage house lines can follow unprotected circuits into your computer.

2.Recycle dead UPS batteries!

3.Test your UPS every couple of months. Plug a 100 watt lamp into it for a load and make sure it runs for 30 minutes. You may never otherwise find out the battery is gone until you needed it.

4.You can not STORE a UPS. If you're not using it, consider selling it, giving it to a friend/family member, or finding another use for it (i.e. backup for the answering machine). The SLA batteries will self-destruct if not kept charged.

Buy and Use an Uninterruptible Power Supply

How to Buy and Use an Uninterruptible Power Supply(2)

Tips

1.UPS devices work well on answering machines, too.

2.Most UPSs will 'beep' annoyingly when the power goes out. This can usually be disabled either through software or a small 'DIP' switch on the back.

3.If your computer's off when the power goes out, the UPS can be safely shut off. They will charge the internal batteries whether on or off.

4.ALL notebook PCs have a battery inside, thus their own 'UPS' built in. They don't have a surge suppressor on their AC power unless you provide one.

5.Most inexpensive UPSs are built around the same 12V/7AH sealed lead acid batteries. One with a dead battery can be 'saved' by cannibalizing one that's broken with a 'good' battery, or you can sometimes scrounge them from big rechargeable spotlights. These also cost around $15 to buy online, but around $15 to ship as well.

6.'Hibernate' is a better (and quicker) option to shut down, assuming your computer supports it. It will come back up with everything as you left it when you shut down, and take a fraction of the time.

7.'Stand By' will save a lot of UPS power (assuming you expect power to come right back), but if the UPS runs out of juice, you'll lose whatever wasn't saved.

Buy and Use an Uninterruptible Power Supply

How to Buy and Use an Uninterruptible Power Supply(1)

Do you have a desktop PC and dread seeing the power go out? Got a wireless router and Modem that share an Internet connection that goes 'black' when the power goes out?Do you have one of those 'VOIP' phones that needs an internet connection to call in emergencies? Have you lost work and data, even hardware when the power went out?

You don't have to worry about it again!

Buy an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), and your computer will stay up during brown outs, and be able to weather black-outs, or at least shut down more gracefully when the power goes off and stays off.

Steps

1.Shop for a uninterruptible power supply.

a Look in office supply stores, big box electronic stores, specialty computer stores, or on the internet.

b For a desktop PC, you're looking for is enough power to supply your computer (the beige or black box), the monitor, and whatever critical IO devices are connected to it.

Most UPS packaging has a list of what the UPS 'should' back up, and for how long. 15 minutes should be plenty long enough to close your documents and shut down safely. An hour will let you 'finish' whatever it was you were doing, and possibly

A printer is not critical, and laser printers eat too much power to plug into a UPS.

Amplified speakers are not critical.

A MODEM or ROUTER that supplies the computer may be critical

c For a router/phone internet connection (presumably with a notebook), you only need a smaller UPS to keep it running for hours.

2.Get the UPS out of its box

3.Follow the directions for it.

a Plug the UPS in

b Plug the monitor, computer and any ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL devices that require power to keep the computer from crashing into the 'Battery protected' plugs

Most UPSs have surge protected plugs that don't offer battery back-up.

4.Even if you don't use a phone line MODEM, if you have a phone on the desk, use the phone filter. You could save yourself an electrocution in the event of a lightning strike.

5.Plug in the monitoring cable (usually USB nowadays) and install the software (or install the software and plug in the cable, as is sometimes called for in the instructions).

6.Configure the software to safely shut down or hibernate the computer if the power goes out and you're asleep or otherwise disposed.

7.After a few hours, the UPS battery will be fully charged and the system will stay up through short black-outs, or at least shut the system down normally when power is interrupted.

Remove a Laptop Keyboard from a Dell Latitude D505

How to Remove a Laptop Keyboard from a Dell Latitude D505

There is nothing geeky in knowing how to remove a laptop keyboard. You can do the same by following some easy to do steps. Please remember that laptops from different manufacturers are very different from each other, and the difference between two models from the same manufacturer might be too much to say the least. The process showcased below is for a Dell Latitude D505 model. Before undertaking this project all by yourself, it is recommended that you go through the manual provided by the manufacturer or do so once or twice in presense of an authorized technical person.

Steps

1.Remove the keyboard bezel. Take a screw driver and put it at the slot of the bezel and using it as a lever pull off the bezel. Once the bezel is displaced the screws that hold the keyboard and the system-board together are visible.

2.Loosen the screws that attach the keyboard and the system-board with a screwdriver of appropriate size. Pull-off the screws once they are sufficiently loosened.

3.Hold the keyboard in your left hand and try to move it at an angle of 45 degree. You will notice that the only other attachment the keyboard has is a cable with a pin at it's end that fits into a socket placed on the system board.

4.Holding the keyboard in your left hand at a comfortable distance, pull the cable pin out of the socket in vertical direction using your right hand. Once the pin is out you will find the keyboard removed.

Tips

1.Be careful while removing the bezel else you might end up making dents on your laptop surface.

2.Use a light colored polythene or cloth to keep all the fasteners such that they are easily accessible to you.

3.Pull off the keyboard connecting cable gently.

Warnings

1.Under no circumstances should you use a screwdriver that is not an exact fit for your laptop screws. In case of such a usage you might end up with a scratched laptop surface.
2.Be careful if using a magnetic screwdriver, a magnet can wreak havoc on the components.

Things You'll Need
1.A laptop
2.A screw driver of appropriate specification
3.Light colored cloth or polythene

Replace the Battery in Your PC

How to Replace the Battery in Your PC

The most important thing to remember when replacing a CMOS battery is static electricity kills computers. There is electrical potential in nearly everything, including your body. The amount of discharge it takes to kill sensitive electronics is way less than you'll ever feel so you can "zap" the components on the board without knowing it until you try to start it up.

Steps

1.Turn off the computer

2.Unplug the computer

3.Remove the side cover

4.Put on your static wrist band (See Tips)

5.Remove old batter with fingernail or use non-conductive screwdriver

6.Install new battery

7.Replace side cover

8.Plug back in

9.urn computer on

10.Enter BIOS Setup and change any settings you need to change

Tips

1.Static Wrist Bands are simple bands that you put on your wrist. They have a cord on them which attaches to the computer frame with an alligator clip. This grounds you to the frame of the computer and evens out the electrical energy.

2.I've only fried one computer by not using a wristband, and that was after playing with it for 10 hours. It's possible to zap a board, but I'd hardly say likely if you remember 1 thing: Prior to touching any electrical component, touch the frame of the computer case (The metal frame inside, not the plastic casing) and keep touching it while working inside. Obviously this limits your available hands to 1, which can be difficult but it's not as hard as you might think.

3.BIOS settings will revert back to factory default when you remove the battery, but if you have to replace a computer battery, you probably already have the default settings. These defaults might work fine for you if you're an average computer user. If you're a gamer you probably already know which settings you need to change. If you're a novice, DON'T TOUCH THEM!
